Bad movies, Bingo and Behold! The Jesus Chair!

Yesterday I ranted incessantly about some of the silly things sold at Christian bookstores. I also invited folks to share some ridiculous items they had come across. Well, Michelle came through in spades with a link to a picture of “The Jesus Chair”. Sweet Fancy Moses!

Anyhoo…for some unexplained reason, it seems this was ignore katdish on the twitter week. But I don’t give up that easily…

And now, the best of me (or not) on the twitter:

@br8kthru That was quite horrible, no? ( in reply to br8kthru @katdish it’s so annoying! Thank you for the birthday greetings & if you send me the Jesus chair it will be regifted. 🙂

@sarahmsalter Tell @br8kthru that excuse is getting tired…

Would someone please tell @br8kthru to stop ignoring me on twitter? He’s been doing it all day.

@VariantVal Pretty much every day. Snort! (in reply to VariantVal Do you ever have days when you just feel extra sexy, and pretty and all hawt??)

@br8kthru Continues to ignore me…

@Brian_Russell Sorry/you’re welcome. (in reply to Brian_Russell @katdish That does help. Thanks. It’s like a smoker trying to quit and breathing in second-hand smoke to cope.)

@Brian_Russell Well, I’m up 44% from last month, if that helps… (in reply to Brian_Russell Day 2 without Google Analytics… I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t REALLY interested in my numbers…)

@br8kthru Happy Birthday Jason! Did you get a new sweater vest?

@gyoung9751 He is very doggy, isn’t he? (in reply to gyoung9751 You have a great dog. And he’s so — doggie.)

This what Buddy Love does after a bath. Annoying… http://twitpic.com/13zw6k

Wait…this is the best side http://twitpic.com/13zgdl

@DaleChumbley @BridgetChumbley I thought “getcherfreakon” was the next blog carnival.

@coffeewithmarty He’s a cranky ho sometimes, but he’s pretty much awesome. (in reply to coffeewithmarty @katdish ill follow your idaho guy 😉

@muchl8r New guy – @coffeewithmarty lives in Iowa, but is from Idaho.

@BridgetChumbley Bahahahahah! (in reply to BridgetChumbley @katdish @coffeewithmarty My new name: Bridget Cafe Chumbley or Bridget Coffeembly Gee… I’m not sure this works for me. *sigh*)

@coffeewithmarty Speak for yourself. @billycoffey is a total hillbilly. (in reply to coffeewithmarty @katdish HAHA! Neither @billycoffey or I are “hillbillies” I don’t think! I’m kinda a city kid stuck in Iowa.)

@coffeewithmarty Although I do seem to find an inordinate amount of hillbillys

@coffeewithmarty Oh, please…It’s not a country boy thing, it’s a “good writing” thing.

@BridgetChumbley You know what? You’re right! Hmmm… (in reply to BridgetChumbley @katdish What’s up with you and men with Coffee/Coffey names? Hmmm….)

@KathleenOverby Yeah, Kathleen. Maybe you shouldn’t read tomorrow. The tree will be fine. The boy? Not so much… (in reply to KathleenOverby @katdish Please don’t crush me. Are you going to bash the sentimental ole tree? I won’t be able to look. Mercy on the stump. I beg you.)

@Helenatrandom I think the point of the book was that you can be a hedonistic, self-indulgent opportunist & God will still love you…(in reply to Helenatrandom @katdish A letdown from about 34 years ago that I still am not over. I am pschologically scarred from that book not having a real point.)

…whist avoiding body checks and pucks to the head. Thoughts?

So, I was thinking it might be cool to combine men’s figure skating with hockey. Skaters would perform artistic skating routines…

@marni71 ZIP IT???? Oh, okay…but not everyone can talk to me like that. Consider yourself lucky. (in reply to marni71 @katdish Oh zip it. I just didn’t see u there due to lack of coffee. Latte is now on board. And….YOU CAIN’T QUIT ME!)

@buzzbyannies Well, thank you. (in reply to buzzbyannies @katdish @marni71 You Texans are ruthless with that unfollow hammer.)

@buzzbyannies If @marni71 doesn’t, we should put the unfollow hammer down on her.

@buzzbyannies That’s okay. We can shun @marni71 together.( in reply to buzzbyannies @marni71 I second the ahem.)

@marni71 Ahem! (in reply to marni71 @Nick_theGeek @makeadiff21 @billycoffey @CandySteele Good morning!)

@ronsteele7 I’m being cursed at by a celebrity! Lawsome. (in reply to ronsteele7 @katdish The teleprompter is broken, so #?% to you, imaginary friend, katdish)

@CandySteele I’m imagining RB typing from a teleprompter & waiting for him to type *?#% you, San Diego! (in reply to CandySteele @katdish RB is responding to blog comments.”That’s a lot of work. I hope I don’t die cuz there might be a lot of them.Oh, wait…nevermind”)

Me thinks some extracts think a bit too highly of themselves! http://twitpic.com/13nlue

@gyoung9751 Snort! (in reply to gyoung9751 @katdish Absolutely. No question about it.)

@gyoung9751 Had we not already established that? (in reply to gyoung9751 That means @katdish is the queen.)

The baby has escaped from the king cake. And he’s GOLD BABY! http://twitpic.com/13njn1

And where do I sign up for something like that?
So, there’s an olympic sport where you ski and shoot stuff with a rifle? Where have I been?

HLAC comments section – Where your raging ADD is always welcome. Just ask @redclaydiaries & buzzbyannies

After seeing The Tooth Fairy, I may have to rethink my screenplay The Life & Times of @billycoffey starring Dwayne Johnson.

@redclaydiaries Oh, it’s not Howard th Duck bad. Just a renter for sure.(in reply to redclaydiaries @katdish GAAA. Well, that settles it. I intend to “forget” to take kids to see it till after it leaves theaters. So thx for that.)

Wow. Just wow. That was 2 hours of my life I’ll never get back. And I have sticky shoes.

@JeffHolton @VariantVal Well, we’re about to see Tooth Fairy. I’m hoping it’s better than I expect it to be.

I am at the movies. My feet are stuck to the floor. Gross.

Has anyone seen the movie The Tooth Fairy? My daughter wants to go see it. Is it horrible?

@sarahmsalter Because I’ve found that one works for me…

@sarahmsalter Ultimately, I think you should go with your instincts on this one. The one that says @katdish is right.

@Nick_theGeek Oh, whateva… (in reply to Nick_theGeek @katdish well b careful arguing with me. beware the power of my mind)

@pagan43 That made me happy!

RT @pagan43: Put a geranium in your hat and be happy.

@Doallas Sharing is nice. But I don’t think I would like it if someone shared a banana by prying my jaws open. Sort of pushy, really… (in reply to Doallas @katdish The orang was sharing, actually. It’s clear it would be a no go (maybe more for you than Buddy).

@Doallas Also? Monkeys stink.

@Doallas Did you see how that ape was prying open the dog’s mouth? Buddy would have a fit! (in reply to Doallas So @katdish, does that mean no orangutan?)

@Doallas Ha! Buddy Monkey Love! (in reply to Doallas @katdish The perfect playmate for Buddy! http://ow.ly/17ADA )

Yeah, weird… http://twitpic.com/139tqn

Pardon me while I rant incessantly – Christian Retail Edition

I love Jesus. I love the church (imperfect as it is). I’m also a big fan of books about faith, theology and Christianity. If I know what I want, I can simply order a book online. But sometimes I don’t know what I’m looking for exactly. Sometimes I just have to wander around a Christian bookstore until I find a book that draws me in. And sometimes I just like to go in Christian bookstores and look at all the ridiculous things they sell besides books. Like yesterday, for example…

I realize this is a familiar rant, but seriously people – we’re all loud and proud about being in the world but not of the world, but the stuff Christian retailers sell just makes me cringe. Some of the most original, brilliant, creative people I know are Christians. None of these people are retail buyers for Christian bookstores. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few things that I wouldn’t mind having, but the vast majority of items found in the gift section are just, well, crap.

Rather than coming up with anything original, they blatantly and proudly rip off secular products as if to say, “Your products are evil and worldly. We are just like you, only better! Take THAT, Satan!”

“What do you mean katdish?”… I’m glad you asked. I have pictures!

This sign encourages girls to be violent towards boys:

This sign is humorous, holy and righteous:

This shirt is suggestive and encourages girls to date the undead:

This sign says…wait – I HEART BOYS? Oh, silly me! I didn’t see the “who love Jesus” part! This sign is awesome and not at all misleading:

This ad features a angry dancing girl who is probably a hoochie mama listening to devil music:

This sign features a prayerful woman who needs only to listen to the Holy Spirit. She doesn’t need music to distract her:

More devil music, no doubt:

Who needs Guitar Hero? God is my Hero (and He hates screaming guitar music):

Trading Cards featuring scary, evil monsters:

Kid: “Mom, all my friends have YuGi-oh cards. Can I get some?”
Mom: “No, but you can have these Redemption trading cards!”
Kid: “But none of my friends have those. Who can I trade with?”
Mom: “I bought some for your sister, too!”
Kid: “Awesome! Thanks, Mom. You’re the best!”

This is just a flat out rip off of Fancy Nancy. And that’s all I have to say about that:

And here’s a couple of other products that I just found annoying:

I appreciate your prayers. I appreciate chocolate chip cookies. So, if you really love me, pray for me and send me cookies. Just don’t spend twenty dollars on a jar of cookies, because once the jar is empty, that’s how my soul will feel:

Don’t get me started…

Ahhh…I feel much better now.

So what’s your favorite Christian rip-off product? Or do you think I’m being harsh and unfair to Christian retailers?

Come on. I can take it.

Bring it, Foo.

UPDATE: Thanks for all the great links to annoying Christian knock off products! A special thanks to Michelle, who gets the “Sweet Fancy Moses!” prize of the week with this entry, the Jesus Chair:

Today is Jason’s Birthday!
Y’all go wish him a Happy 50th!

And I’m pretty sure he appreciates prayers and cookies, too!

The Giving Tree I’d Like to read

There are days here at HLAC where I will tell you a story and attempt to convey an important lesson or biblical truth.

This is not one of those days.

If you’ve been following along for more than a few months, you are well aware that I am NOT a fan of Shel Silverstein’s book The Giving Tree. The following is not an attempt to address what I feel is a warped and self-serving view of God. It’s just me being snarky…

The Giving Tree
By Katdish

Once there was a tree…and she loved a little boy. And every day the boy would come and he would gather her leaves and make them into crowns and play king of the forest. He would climb up her trunk and swing from her branches and eat apples. And they would play hide-and-seek. And when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade. And the boy loved the tree…very much. And the tree was happy.

But time went by. And the boy grew older. And the tree was often alone. Then one day the boy came to the tree and the tree said, “Come, Boy, come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat apples and play in my shade and be happy.”

“I am too big to climb and play,” said the boy. “I want to buy things and have fun. I want some money. Can you give me some money?”

“I’m sorry,” said the tree, “but I have no money, I have only leaves and apples. Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in the city. Then you will have money, but don’t be fooled into believing that money will make you happy, or that it’s okay to simply take from one who provides for you without any sense of gratitude. Because while I give you these apples as a gift, how you use this gift will speak volumes to me and the rest of the world about your character. And so the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples and carried them away. And the tree was hopeful.

But the boy stayed away for a long time…and the tree was disappointed. And then one day the boy came back and the tree was happy to see him and she said, “Come, Boy, climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and be happy.”

“I am too busy to climb trees,” said the boy. “I want a house to keep me warm. I want a wife and I want children, and so I need a house. Can you give me a house?”

“I have no house,” said the tree. “The forest is my house. What did you do with the money you made from selling the apples? Did you squander that money away on yourself? Did you do anything with that money to help anyone else?…I will take your silence to mean that you did much of the former and none of the latter. Had you given freely to someone else as I have given freely to you, I was prepared to offer my branches to you in order that you might build a house for yourself. But clearly, you have learned nothing about gratitude and are still the selfish little boy that I knew so many years ago. So sorry – you’re on your own.” And the boy was not happy, but the tree had had enough.

And the boy stayed away for a long time. And when he came back, the tree said, “Come, Boy. Come and play.”

I am too old and sad to play,” said the boy. “I want a boat that can take me far away from here. Can you give me a boat?”

“CAN I GIVE YOU A BOAT?!? What have you been doing for the past 60 years? Have you spent your life as a human parasite living off the generosity of others while offering nothing in return? And finally, at the end of your miserable existence when everyone else has refused you, you have the audacity to come here and ask me for a boat? A boat my ASS!”

And the boy hung his head. After all of those years he realized how he had wasted his entire life trying to make himself happy. Thinking the world revolved around him. And he realized what a complete tool he had been. And he hugged the tree and thanked her for all she had done for him. This time he was truly grateful and truly remorseful. And he asked if she would be so kind as to allow him to be buried underneath her so that he could be close to the only one that had ever loved him.

And then he died.

The End.

Pillow Talk

A rare photo of my bed when it’s made

There are too many decorative pillows on my bed.

Well, that’s not entirely accurate.

I should say there are too many decorative pillows on the floor next to my bed: 3 euroshams, 2 king sized shams, 1 large square, 2 smaller squares and 2 rounds. I don’t make the bed every day. It takes too long. That’s my excuse, anyway…

Why all the pillows? Because I love the idea of a beautifully made bed, I just don’t like to spend the time it takes to make that idea a reality. I would prefer to have bedding that was less fussy, but I resist the change. Why?

Investment – The bedding is seven years old. Even so, it’s in good condition. It was also custom made and a lot of money was spent on it. (In the interest of full disclosure, I’ll tell you that my mom is an excellent seamstress, so the cost of labor wasn’t the issue, and my mother-in-law bought the fabric as a house warming gift. But the fabric was still expensive, and money was spent.) The matching window treatment is also custom made, as are the coordinating window treatments in the adjoining master bedroom. Then there’s the coordinating paint and accessories, etc. It seems like such a waste of time and money to redecorate just to avoid making my bed every day.

Coordinating window treatments in the master bath

But in the end, it’s just stuff. Pretty nice stuff, but stuff all the same. Perhaps I should make my bed every day. Then I could enjoy the beauty of a beautifully made bed.

But sometimes I think the things we want to own end up owning us. It’s a struggle for me. I need to simplify, and enjoy the gifts that cannot be bought with money. The gifts that are priceless.

Holding On (by Billy Coffey)

This story was originally posted on What I Learned Today back in May of last year. Some of you who read it back then had asked for an update, which Billy has assured me will be forthcoming next Monday. Stay tuned…

But for now, here’s Part One:

I listen as she talks, nodding and smiling and saying “Uh-huh” every few words so she’ll know I’m getting ready to say something wise. The softball glove I had been restringing is now in front of me on the desk, put there so she knows she has my undivided attention. This is serious stuff. Especially when you’re twenty-two.

“So,” she asks, “what do you think?”

“I think you should ask your boyfriend,” I say.

“He says he’s not worried. We can still keep in touch.”

“He has a point.”

“But I told him that’s not the same.”

“You have a point, too,” I concede.

Then, she repeats: “So what do you think?”

A year’s worth of accumulated college stuff is packed into her battered Ford outside. It’s been a long year of studying and cramming and writing, enough to make even the most ardent student eager to turn tail and run home for the summer. But she’s stuck around, unwilling to leave because of what she will leave behind.

“It’s not that far, you know,” I offer.

“It’s Utah,” she says. “That’s a long way from Virginia.”

“Could be worse. You could live in California. That would add a few hundred miles.”

I smile, but she doesn’t smile back.

“Why did I have to fall for a guy here?” she asks.

I shrug. “The heart knows what it wants,” I answer. “Rational thought is sometimes left out of the equation.”

“But he’s here, and I’m going to be there.”

“But you’ll be back here in three months,” I say. “That’s not a big deal. And there are plenty of ways to keep in touch until then.”

“But I can’t see him,” she says. “Talking over the phone and emailing isn’t the same as seeing him.”

“Because you’re in love?”

“Yes.”

The nod I give her isn’t a sarcastic one, but an acknowledgment of the truth. They are in love. Truly, madly, deeply in love. Love in its truest sense is not solely the domain of people who have been around for longer than twenty-two years. I see them on campus and I know. Love has a look.

“I don’t want to go,” she says. “I want to stay here. With him.”

“But you have to go, right?” I ask.

I get silence as an affirmative.

“And you want to know if your love for each other can withstand the distance between you?”

More silence.

She sits across from me, chewing on a fingernail. In the background the radio is playing Alan Jackson’s “Small Town Southern Man.” Fitting, I think, because that’s exactly what this city girl from Utah has found. And though I don’t know him well, I know enough to think she’d better hang on to him. Because it’s always been my opinion that those small town Southern men are worth keeping around. My own bias of course, since I’m one of them.

She breaks her silence and says, “So what do you think?”

“I think yes,” I say. “I think if you love him as much as he says he loves you, then distance is irrelevant. I think that wherever either of you are, the other one will always be. Faith is a powerful thing. Hope, too. But love? Nothing stops love. And if it’s as strong as you say it is, then that love will always be something you can stand under whenever the rain starts pouring.”

“We’ll be all right?” she asks.

“As long as the two of you don’t give up on each other.”

She smiles at that. She has hope now. Hope that life and circumstance do not have the last say when it comes to matters of the heart.

That in the end, love always holds on.

Speak to us of Love

An excerpt from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

Then said Almitra, Speak to us of Love.

And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said:

When love beckons to you, follow him,

Though his ways are hard and steep.

And when his wings enfold you yield to him,

Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you,

And when he speaks to you believe in him,

Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,

So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in the their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.

He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;

And he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God’s sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life’s heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure,

Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor,

Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.

Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;

For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say, “God is in my heart,” but rather, “I am in the heart of God.”

And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.

But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.
Or to be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

~ Kahlil Gibran

Oh, lots of twitpics, much of the country had incredible amounts of snow while I tried to show solidarity by wearing socks and long sleeved shirts, @billycoffey continues to sass me, @Brian_Russell continues to obess over his Analytics, and @Nick_theGeek and I actually have a serious conversation on the twitter. But don’t worry, it didn’t last long. And if you’re new here, the tweets will make more sense if you start from the bottom and read up. But not much more sense…

Okay. I need to go write something longer than 140 characters.

Good News! I made blackened chicken for dinner. Bad News: I wasn’t trying to make blackened chicken.

My daughter wants me to watch a Jonas Brothers movie with her. It’s like she doesn’t even know me…

@Brian_Russell You should raise your standards.

@Brian_Russell That’s kinda sad, really. (in reply to Brian_Russell @katdish As odd as you may find it, yes, you’re in that group.)

@RobinMArnold I think using the term “the twitter” avails more opportunities for a TWSS moment. Win – win. (in reply to RobinMArnold @katdish I have always wondered about the proper use of Twitter, or THE Twitter?)

@weightwhat Metaphorically, apparently. (in reply to weightwhat @Helenatrandom How, exactly, do the Amish play cards?)

@billycoffey You keep forgetting I have kinfolk in your neck of the woods. Lots of them. (in reply to billycoffey @RobinMArnold You know, @katdish can talk pretty tough from fifteen hundred miles away.)

@billycoffey What to the ever…(in reply to billycoffey @katdish It has. Dang it, shunning starting…now.)

@billycoffey Hey Gimpy! How are you feeling?

@Nick_theGeek So I suppose that takes us back to where we started. We can’t fix things, but God can. (in reply to Nick_theGeek @katdish I can tell you about God’s ability to break this cycle first hand. Not for me but for my dad.)

@Nick_theGeek So these kids stay in the home, nothing changes & they end up being abusers or victims. THAT’S WHAT IS SO FRUSTRATING! (in reply to Nick_theGeek @katdish it is “investigated” and in the two instances nothing happened. In the one I didn’t even think I should call it in though.)

@Nick_theGeek but they get put right back in. Don’t they? (in reply to Nick_theGeek @katdish I am a manatory reporter if it affects a minor. I have had to call twice.)

@Nick_theGeek What’s your legal obligation? If any? If you know this stuff is going on? (in reply to Nick_theGeek @katdish preaching to the choir here. I work with a lot of troubled kids.)

@br8kthru Whoa! Where did that come from? No, no plans for a novel. Although a katdishionary is possible. (in reply to br8kthru @katdish yeah it was unsettling – so you planning on writing a novel?)

@Nick_theGeek I know. It’s just so frustrating though. (in reply to Nick_theGeek @katdish yeah I think we need to remember that *we* can’t fix any thing … blog post idea it might be really good)

@Nick_theGeek it’s like you said, I want to fix everything, but I can’t. (in reply to Nick_theGeek @katdish yes ur post yesterday was very unsettling)

Okay. I’m serious this time. Really have to go watch 24 this week. It was disappointingly lacking in violence last week.

@billycoffey I’m totally Superman. (in reply to billycoffey @SMBlooding We’re like brother and sister. Or Superman and Lex Luthor.)

Crazy writers…

Katdishionary Part 3

Ah yes, fair readers. It’s time for yet another installment in this never ending flowing fountain of blog fodder known as Katdishionary, where I attempt to explain the origins of made up words found here and other places I frequent around the internets.

In case you missed the first two installments, you may find them here:

The Katdish Dictionary Part One

Katdishionary Part Two

And now, on with the katdishionary:

Getcherfreakon(pronounced get-cher-freak-on)

Definition: Alternative title for a post in which I was supposed to described 7 weird things about myself.

Origin: Getcherfreakon : Here is a brief (or not) excerpt from the original post:

My buddy Steph at The Red Clay Diaries tagged me to write seven weird things about myself. Seriously, it would be more of a challenge to write seven things that were normal about me, but whatever. So, I thought I’d throw in some things that would you might find surprising about me, because I’m fairly sure you’re down with the fact that I’m pretty weird. Well, here goes:

1) Since some of my blogger friends kept commenting on my blog, thereby distracting me from writing this post (I’m ignoring you Steph, by the way), by the time I was ready to write this, all the clever titles had been taken. So I was originally going to call this blog post “HOT MONKEY SEX“. But then I thought about what kind of traffic a title like that might bring in, and how bitterly disappointed they would be, and thought better of it.

Lawsome(law-some)

Definition: A combination of the words lame and awesome, meaning both equally lame and awesome.

Origin: Used to describe my friend Angela of Vanities of Vanities who is lawsome because she disagrees with me sometimes and gets all pretend indignant with me. Lawsome.

Man Candy(pronounced man-can-dee)

Definition: a term used to describe my using Monday’s guest blogger Billy Coffey to attract a wider female audience. (Which, BTW, it totally did.)

Origin: The comments section of Billy’s intro to this blog, Answer: An Increase in Female Readership where Wendy from Weight What made the following comment:

Using Billy as man-candy? Shame on you! Now do it some more.

(See also mantastic)

Snort (pronounced snort!)

Definition: The representation of laughter in written form. Although, truth be told I don’t actually “snort” when I laugh. I either belt out a rather loud “bah ha ha” or snicker like Muttley, Dick Dastardly’s sidekick in those old Hanna Barbera cartoons.

Origin: Oh, heck. It’s late. I can’t remember…

This concludes this portion of the Katdishionary. Stayed tuned for more installments soon. And as always, Sorry/you’re welcome.

Community and a Contest

When I started blogging almost two years ago, I had no clear direction. I just knew I had some things to say and having a place to say it (and perhaps even have a few people listen) seemed like a pretty cool thing. Seems like a self-absorbed endeavor if you stop and think about it.

But I didn’t.

Think about it, that is.

For months I was sort of winging it. If you go back and read some of my earliest writing, that’s evident. It was all about me and what I thought. But that gets boring. Seriously — who cares? I didn’t even care all that much.

But then a wonderful thing happened. This blog became less about me and more about the relationships that were beginning to take form here and on other blogs I frequented. As the popularity of this blog grew, so did my sense of responsibility to help others when and where I could. I’m still not that big a deal, not even so much a medium sized deal, but I do what I can.

Last month I wrote a post about my friend Sarah Salter. Sarah will be going to the Sudan on a mission trip this summer, and my friend Wendy at Weight What is helping raise money for her expenses by donating a portion of the proceeds of sales from her Etsy shop to Sarah’s mission fund. You will find a link to Wendy’s shop on the right hand side bar of this blog.

To kick things off, Wendy suggested a giveaway. Because who doesn’t like some free stuff? The first prize winner will receive one of her $28 shirts, which are a available in a variety of sizes.

Second prize winner will receive a set of button wraps.

To enter, simply tell me in the comments section why you think you deserve to win. Be creative — a poem, haiku, short story – whatever. If you’re on the twitter (and if you’re not, then why not?), tweet your three favorite items from the shop, then come back here and let me know you did.

As in previous contests here, I will not be judging the entries. I will once again call upon my friends Jeff and Tamara Hogan – two of my non-virtual friends. (Jeff and Tam, if you’re reading this, thank you in advance for agreeing to judge the contest – Snort!) You have until Thursday, February 18, midnight CST to enter. Enter early. Early often. And please, no wagering.

If you find something there that you simply can’t live without, be sure to put “Sarah” in the comments section of your order so that a portion of the proceeds will go towards her mission trip.

Ready?

Set?

GO!

Editor’s Note: I realize this has been a pretty serious week here at Hey Look a Chicken, so tomorrow I promise to post something incredibly stupid and ridiculous. Sorry/you’re welcome.

Now Go…

Crave – Wanting so much more of God (review & giveaway)

Excerpts from Crave: Wanting so much more of God by Chris Tomlinson:

“I hate to floss.”

“I don’t like people all that much.”

Not exactly declarations you might expect to read from a book in the “Spiritual Growth” section of your local bookstore.

But what if I told you “I hate to floss” begins a chapter about developing spiritual disciplines, or that Tomlinson’s admission of “I don’t like people all that much”, begins a monologue about putting aside our need to “do big things for God” and embracing the concept that the Story of Jesus is the only one that truly matters?

With no hint of false humility I’ve sometimes sensed in other so called “spiritual growth” books, Chris Tomlinson takes his readers through his own spiritual journey; one which he openly admits he is still struggling through. In one of my favorite, and for me, one of the most relatable passages in the book, he shares one of his prayers, filtered through his rambling thoughts:

God, You are so amazing and majestic. The heavens declare Your glory, and there’s nothing quite like a sunset to show off Your artistry. I love to watch the sun setting over the ocean, God. You know, I love the ocean. In fact, my favorite place to be is sitting on a surfboard in the water at El Porto, gazing over the mountains behind Malibu. Actually, that view is always ruined by the smokestacks at the oil refinery. Who would put a refinery on the beach? I wonder how they actually make gasoline? You know, it cost me $60 the other day to fill up my truck. Why are gas prices so high right now?

I shook it off.

God, I’m sorry I wandered off there. Thank You for Your mercy and for always being there for me.You are such a loving Father, and You are always so incredibly patient with me, even when I’m off doing my own thing or I’m stuck in a rut. You know, Anna was in a bad mood the other night; I said what I said to her to try and help, but it only made things worse. I don’t think she was actually listening to me at all, and it was really hard to be patient with her. But I was. I’m a pretty patient guy; no, I’m am really patient guy. Don’t You agree, God?

If you’re looking for a Sunday School type guide book on how to become a better Christian, this book is probably not for you. However, if you’re looking for a frank, honest and open account of one man’s ongoing journey (and chances are, many of yours) to make less of himself and much more of Jesus, I would highly recommend Crave.

Chris Tomlinson is a businessman and writer. He grew up in Memphis, TN, went to college in Colorado Springs, spent 9 years in Los Angeles, and now lives in Northern Virginia. For more information about Chris Tomlinson and his writing, and for a free download of the first three chapters of Crave, visit him at his website, Crave Something More.
